(Never looked at R, but I do write in python a lot)

It's not a problem when you write one-off scripts no one will ever see. 
It's a problem when somebody else is told to take your "code" and turn 
it into a web service. Or plug it into a workflow.

Does $_=($1!qw'^(.)$'\1'i) look simple and intuitive to you? You can 
write perl in any language, as the saying goes, but some of them make it 
harder then others. Matlab isn't one of those, python is.
