Change XTickLabel on plot

Hi everyone 

i know that maybe it's a frequently asked question

I want to change ticks on a plot and i need to write greek letters
in the ticks, expecially alpha (α) but if use this code

set(gca,'XTickLabel',{'t_{\alpha}'})

in the plot label i see alpha and not α. i tried to look in the 
octave manual but i didn't see any explaination about this

have you got any idea?
