There isn't a plan in place. The first step would be to propose a technical
approach that is feasible. It would be necessary that the approach works for
ps, eps, bitmapped, and displayed results.
This sort of planning is beyond my abilities. So I won't be of much help.
There are others on the maintainers/developers mail list who would have more
insight.
