Blank image() plot from Octave-3.6.4 on OS X with gnuplot-4.6.1 and aquaterm-1.1.1

#Test case:

A(1:512,1:512)=0;
A(256-10:256+10,256-10:256+10)= 255;

#then either

imagesc(A)

#or

image(A)

I saw the bug reports about this issue:

but apparently it wasn't fixed.

Is there a workaround other than changing the plot terminal?
