But there still seems to be an issue with continuation to the next
line; with autofill on, pressing space after

  x = 12;                         # aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa

produces

  x = 12;                         # aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa
                                # 

for continuation on the next line, which is what I'd expect, but TAB
or ALT-q on this second line looses the indentation and puts the
comment sign into the first column.
