Leo,
trying to load the newest versions of octave.el from
http://repo.or.cz/w/emacs.git/blob_plain/HEAD:/lisp/progmodes/octave.el
with M-x octave-mode from emacs 24.3 I get the message:
Symbol's function definition is void: add-function
and nothing is highlighted in the m-code.
Sorry that I can't debug elisp problems myself ...
