the Debian packagers of Octave apply patches to pkg.m that
make it essentially unusable for normal users.

It is recomended that you do not mix methods of installation, i.e.,
if you installed Octave via the Ubuntu package manager, you should
als install packages via the same method, i.e.:

sudo apt-get install octave-struct
