If you are only interested in 2D plots, you should definitely
have a look at veusz [1].
It is Free Software, it reads easily data exported by Octave
and produces very good quality figures especially well suited
for inclusion in LaTeX documents.
In particular its annotation features are by far superior to
paraview.
