Yep that is called 'progress". It's inevitable :-)
Some functions in 2.2.1 didn't work anymore for a long time due to a
dependency on outdated functions in the general package. Those functions are
now in core Octave-4.0.0+; the dependency on general is gone (wasn't in the
NEWS file).
The only other notable difference with 2.2.0/2.2.1 is a bug fix (typo) in
(IIRC) kronecker/iscomplex.m and maybe a cosmetic issue in funm.m.
So for Octave-3.8.2 you 'll have to make do with linear-algebra-2.2.1.
