is it possible to get data from .xlsx (as from .xls) worksheet?

Dear Octave Crew

Thank you very much for creation and make available such a great tool like GNU 
Octave. I am a happy user of it. Still I am learning it, this is why my 
question pops up. I can access data by XLSREAD function but it seems this does 
not work for XLSX files but only for XLS. Somehow more and more people are 
using new Excel producing XLSX format. Is it possible somehow to use any 
function to get data from XLSX.

PS: I know I can export this to ASCI or CVS etc but if i need to do it for 
hundreds of files can be a bit difficult.
