Dear Vic,
if you post bugs please make sure that you use the latest version and
preferably check the bug tracker first since the problem might be fixed
already (Octave is currently at version 4 while you are using 3.8). It's not
trivial to install version 4 on the mac but many people are currently
working on it. I think the only blackbox solution available today is to use
homebrew.
I do not believe that Octave endangers your system's stability. Operating
system are nowadays reliably taking care of those things. I have seen
occasional crashes of Octave but that's it.
