Carlo, I think the problem was that he was giving it impossible parameters. Now that we sorted that out, ode45 is fast. I am using rc4. he was on 4.0.0

Can you try comparing this between odepkg under Octave stable and ode45 in the development branch?
That said, when ode45 performs poorly it is often due to a stiff problem being solved, can you try solving with a stiff equation solver?
