Ok, then let's discuss the whole workflow:

#1. Install homebrew as described here: http://brew.sh

#2. get the latest updates and install them
brew update
brew upgrade

#3. get access to scientific software 
brew tap homebrew/science

#4 install octave
brew install octave --with-java
