Octave currently doesn't support setting the root units to "characters". But
I think it should (at least for compatibility with Matlab, see [1]).
I can't find an open bug report for this. Could you please file a new one on
savannah for that?
I can't think of a better work-around different from yours unfortunately.
Maybe figure('Visible', 'off') makes the process a little less intrusive.
