look at reshape on
https://octave.org/doc/interpreter/Rearranging-Matrices.html#Rearranging-Matrices

as it seems you want to convert from a 3 indices matrix
to a 2 indices matrix , or a portion of it

a=rand(2,3,4)

ans(:,:,1) =
