The behaviour I reported regarding Octave 5 rc is the same behaviour of
Octave 4.4.1! Only now have I noticed that, sorry... Probably a idiosyncrasy
of my system.

Meanwhile I've noticed an odd behavior: if I run the script not once, but
two times  in sequence without closing the figure window, then the second
run plot uses all the window!

Your script is working for me with Octave 5 on Windows 10.
Are you using a HiDPI monitor or multiple monitors with different DPI
settings?
