The link you gave me for documentation at octave forge is much better than the documentation available in the octave program.
i was not aware of the octave forge. yes this documentation is much better.

It has many examples, starts at the most basic level before building up to more advanced topics, and explains how to read the documentation, here in the beginning of the documentation.There are also many copy-and-paste examples on sourceforge; here is one relevant to your question.Lastly, I have a long way to go before I become an expert... i have a 3D surface plot but the scale on the 3 axes are all different.
can someone please show me how to set all axes to the same scale.
