It is of no use to have #asString do the work on a separate stream; change
it to #printOn: tstream, then you have

process: aMessage
    ....
    self printOn: stream
!

asString
    ^self printString
!

printOn: tstream
    tstream nextPut: $<; nextPutAll: tag.
    ....
    tstream nextPutAll: ' />' ].
! !

Looks nicer :-)
