Ok if you can hide the -p argument, i.e. show only "gst -V" to the user.

appends "--emacs-mode" to the command line.  I figure this heuristic
will degrade more gracefully.
Yes, this was what I meant... I committed the patch, modifying the helpstring for the variable to specify that you should not use --/-a/-f.
