I did:

git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/smalltalk.git

Results:

* First, a lot of gcc warnings:

gcc --version
gcc (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) 4.8.2

* Second, plenty of other warnings on ./configure && make.

* Third, make check was completely OK:
