AFAIK, you can use <link> (within <head>) to provide the needed info; if
I remember correctly, only lynx makes makes proper use of <link>
settings (I'm not sure what's up with mozilla in this area).

Agreed. With Emacs 21 it theoretically should become possible to
display inline real images as part of info documents.
