You are absolutely right this is infact the problem. Even a simple <pbc> such 
as created by vcdxgen -t svcd file.mpg will cause my player to not display the 
subtitles. However it seems that it does not have this problem with 'cvd-type' 
subtitles. 

Is there any software that can create cvd subtitles under linux? (Comments in 
the submux source state that its not implemented there yet, unfortenuately).
