0) I have set nntp-connection-timeout in ~/.gnus
(setq nntp-connection-timeout 30)
2) Connection to news server "with link down" (black hole for TCP/IP
packets) hangs "forever" anyway
[ The server is mentioned only in gnus-refer-article-method ]
Software Info:
* OS: Linux/Debian/Squeeze(=testing)
* Emacs package: emacs23 23.1+1-4

And other operators aren't so special syntactically, but weird
in other ways, like "scalar", and "goto".
