Well, abstracting the code generator is obviously a must. I think the discussion
should be geared more towards which intermediate representation will be
used. You can then target for portable C code, a pseudo-assembly or directly
assembly.
Are there any high quality intermediate representation implementations in free
software projects which could be used?
