@Reini thanks for your answers. You'll be glad to know that FreeCAD now can use LibreDWG out of the box in 0.19 on linux and windows. Okay, it didn't work OOTB for me on Windows, but was easy to get working manually. I've updated some things:

https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title=Drawing_(DWG)
https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title=LibreDWG
https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title=Donation_Directory#LibreDWG
https://wiki.freecadweb.org/FreeCAD_and_DWG_Import

As you know, but for the interest of other readers:
LibreCAD 2 still uses libdxfrw and maybe one would say that LibreCAD2 is in maintenance mode. LibreCAD 3 currently regards LibreDWG as less stable than libdxfrw for now https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD_3/issues/207 and are unsure if there is a need to switch.

It seems to me that there is a need to do some feature parity testing - anyone got a suggestion of the best way to do this?

@Martin what are the other CAD packages you're thinking of? I would like to contact them.

The idea of LibreCAD  3was always to be full MIT without any GPL but due to a commit that added an GPL license that was way later discovered a part of it is now GPLed .

I believe the core engine should still be MIT ...

LibreCAD 3 is released under GPLv3+ like LibreDWG and use a different library (less accurate). So honestly I don't think that the license is a problem, GPLv3 is compatible eith other license like EUPL1.2 and other...

The problems are probably other, for example the non existence of a simple but serious alternative of CAD 2D, gtkcad, gcad, qcad, librecad, much projects but not yet ready to use.

Hi there Reini Urban

Over at osarch.org we've been talking about DWG support in free software and how we can promote it. We think it's critical to free software gaining broad adoption in the AEC sector. I was wondering if anyone could make or direct me to some kind of statement on the current status of DWG support in free software and what's needed to push it forward.

As far as I am aware no free software projects use libreDWG out of the box. That is something we at osarch.org would love to help change.

If the reply comes on this list I will forward it, but maybe you would like to make a presentation to one of our monthly meetings, an update to the webpage (if needed) or help us write a news article we can promote on our social media.

I can see on the forum there has been plenty of work done - but I have no idea what that means in practice. I think a quick email interview we can use for an article might be the best start - how does that sound?

Regards, Duncan
