First of all, how do you know these funds have been effectively spent?
Maybe it could be possible to do it for less?
Secondly, Windows kernel development probably took a baijillion of
dollars. That did not stop Linux from being developed without such
funding.
And finally, never underestimate NGOs and the sheer power of large
numbers of interested people. Just look at what's happening on
Kickstarter and other crowdfunding places. Iron Sky was partly
financed by crowdfunding.
Instead of looking for reasons to say "it's impossible", why don't we
look at possibilities and *how* we can make that possible?
Also, I personally believe Steam on Linux is a *good* thing for now,
as it means more people, more software, more visibility for this
platform. But we must start working on libre alternatives (like
Desura) ASAP, so that when the devs will get to Linux and start
breathing the air of freedom - and some of them will want to open-
source their games - they have a way.
