I'm not sure if you mean software based or a piece of hardware. As for
software based, I find FBReader to be quite good. I have it installed
on my netbook and my phone (running Replicant). A replicant device
with FBReader takes the place of the Kindle for me.
OpenInkPot was an active project but development recently stopped on
it. I think it ran on some more obscure e-ink devices:
