Hello local LibrePlanet community,
Over here at FreeGeekSeattle.org, we're *really, really, really* low
on Workshop Leads, our main venture. We get hardware donations,
refurbish it in Workshop training classes, teach people how hardware
works, show them how to install and use Linux.
Hardware refurb program aside, we also do FOSS software training.
We're trying to do a larger training program in the Fall, focused on
FOSS-based software skills to help with job placement (we're mainly
focusing on Linux-centric sysadmins, but open to other directions).
We follow the Free Software Foundation principles, one of the very few
local groups that does. We're also really, really, really, low on
FSF-friendly volunteers to help as Workshop Leads. (We've nearly more
volunteers to teach Windows and VMWare than GPL-licensed projects!)
And we have only 2-3 FOSS trainer volunteers. We need half a dozen of
each to sustain ourselves.
We also need a host for workshops; we're fit into a tiny lab right
now, we could use some growing space. If you know of a
makerspace/hackerspace, school, library, or other org that could host
workshops (or training classes), please let us know.
There are many local places where you can recycle/refurbish computers,
and where you can learn software skills. There are multiple places for
FSF socializing. Free Geek Seattle is the ONLY local place locally
which focuses on refurbishing and training; we reach out to needy
citizens that need hardware/software and help them, a bit more
satisfying than meeting for dinner in front of your laptop. This
FSF-centric commnity project may not survive much longer w/o some more
help from some FSF-friendly volunteers.
Do you know the basics of PC hardware? Do you know a FOSS-related job
skill to teach? If so, please consider joining us at Free Geek
Seattle. We REALLY need help right now! Join the mailing list and IRC
and say hello.

"Free Geek Seattle is modeled after the original non-profit Free Geek
of Portland, Oregon. Our focus is free and open source software
advocacy, technology education, and sustainable computing, and to
provide sustainable, affordable computing solutions utilizing free
software, refurbished, and low-cost devices. Primarily by empowering
people, secondarily promoting and developing Free Software."
Thanks,
Lee
