Patchy the autobot says: Text dimensions behave unpredictably.  Generally,  
no distance to other objects including other texts (baseline-skip ?) is  
kept.  But there are worse problems, like in script-stack-order.ly where  
texts down 1 down 2 and down 3 are compressed into the space needed for 1.5  
lines.
