Why would such a warning be necessary? It will be obvious from the log that no output file has been produced, and it’s perfectly consistent/natural that the second example above doesn’t produce an output file.
[issues:#864] Source files that don't produce a PDF should output a warning message

This is a silly example, of course, but it would be safer if a warning
message was outputted *every* time that a PS or MIDI file is not produced.
