For windows no driver to install. You just plug in and enable the Frescobaldi midi input feature. Absolutely trivial.

The mk3 is USB class compliant, and it should work out of the box in linux too with no additional software or hacks needed. I haven't tried it personally, though.
(You mentioned using open source software, which makes me think you may be a linux user.)
