Hi,

You are very unlucky...
Did you run depmod -a before doing modprobe ? I suppose it is
automatically done when doing make install of alsa-drivers.
If it still does not work, then you probably be good to compile a newer
kernel (2.4.18) or try to compile older version of alsa (0.9beta6 ?).
The 2.4.2 kernel is a bit outdated. 2.4.18 is much more stable.
Can't you get a newer kernel as a rpm package from your distributor ? It
should be a better idea that trying to compile the kernel itself, which
is something quite long. Furthermore, in order to compile a kernel
succesfully, you need a gcc-2.95.2 or 2.95.3, not 2.96 (the one that is
offered by Redhat and Mandrake. (I don't remember what is your
distribution).
