That's my problem. As seen in the amixer output above, my current audio
driver does not expose these functions. This is true for all mixer apps,
including kmix.

I had problems getting audio to run at the beginning here, so I installed
a driver module off the internet.

Maybe a mistake, it might have been a desktop one.
I've tried googling for the HDA drivers but found too many hits - a bit
confusing. Can you please direct me to a URL that has current HDA audio
drivers that I can install into my /lib/modules directory and that will
cooperate with SuSE 9.3?

Then I will probably have the sliders you described and can truns things
on & off.
