Maybe it's my onboard sound, but my card has always had troubles with rate using dmix.  It doesn't seem to upsample them correctly.  I still use linphone but I've been searching for a gstreamer voip app, as for some reason gstreamer seems to be the only thing that upsample low rates (8000hz) correctly.

So upsampling built into a voip app would be great, but I understand that it can seem like a wasted effort for a workaround for cards with buggy drivers.

Any plans on writing a gstreamer backend?

You can just create a .asoundrc file that setups dmix+dsnoop as your 'default'
alsa device, then you can select the default device using the "soundcard"
command of linphonec.

Find attached my .asoundrc file.
