At first you should have your system uptodate (emerge --sync && emerge
- -uDva world). Then you could check linphone from portage. I have
installed masked version 1.3.5 and it works.

I have installed 1.3.99.6 by hand and it works too (appart sipomatic and
truespeech suppport).

ALSA configuration is specific to alsa-lib version and your sound card.
E.g. my ICH6 with ALC203 had problems with proper channel labeling.
Latest stable version fixed it.

It is also hard to give an advice about mixer setting, because every
sound cards has its own layout. I think you should check it with some
simple tools like aplay and arecord. After that you should set up
[sound] section in ~/.linphonerc properly.
