I have made some minor changes to linphone in order to do that.  (My
changes are quick hacks to the code, and not anything that is really
well-designed.)

But it would be nice to be able to do this.  Maybe some of the people
who currently use linphone can contribute code or ideas in this
direction.  I've passed my changes back to Simon for his perusal and
possible inclusion; I'll bet if someone has the time to do some
well-thought-out coding in this direction it would be quite welcome.
