This *does* work with the internal mic.

If the above works, it means that ALSA works fine!

It means that, for some reason, the ALSA default device is not hw:0,0

You try looking at:

The thing is that in my Ubuntu 10.04 I have no more .asoundrc or asound.conf :-)

Anyway, what is the output of:
cat /proc/asound/cards 
?
