With my Nexus S running 2.3 I can make SIP calls through my mobile
operator or
WiFi without having any SIP apps installed. For WiFi only I deselect
Mobile
Data. It's not very flexible because as you pointed out it is pretty
much
integrated with Android contacts. Without SIP app installed when I
choose a
contact I am prompted "Cell Phone Call or Internet Call". With Linphone
installed and choosing a contact I am first prompted "Dialer or
Linphone" If I
choose Dialer then is the same as above.

No I don't think you need the android 2.3 (gingerbread) because
that's if
you want android to have a sip stack but with native android sip
stack you
can't make calls through mobile operator, only have option of making
sip
calls using wifi. Also for you to be able to call a sip address you
have
to put in the persons sip address as a contact in android 2.3
(Gingerbread).

I believe you need 2.3 gingerbread for native SIP dialer.

Linphone do have that ability. Try to dial some number via
Dialer, as
soon as you press call button, you get to choose between
phone
dialer and Linphone(or other SIP services).

Doesn't work here: if I call a number using android dialer
it's
passed
through mobile operator, if I call from linphone dialer it is
going
through SIP operator. No one ask me to choose operator. HTC
Hero
running Android 2.2 linphone 1.2.2
