si può scaricare ed è distribuito con GPL v2

il motivo per cui Social (o GNU Social, come forse si chiamerà se e 
quando diventerà un progetto GNU) è più interessante è innanzitutto il 
fatto che usi l'Affero GPL, che offre maggiori garanzie di libertà 
essendo un software destinato ai network service:
