I think you should trust that.
In AN205 (from www.cirrus.com) they state at the first point:

Q: Application note 181 says that interupts are not supported in 8-bit
mode. Is this really true?
A: Yes, this really is true. Interupts are NOT supported in 8-bit
mode. They might appear to work for a while but will eventually fail.

For CS8900-programmers that not yet had read the AN205(from jun 2001),
I will suggest you to do so, this AN have a lot of answers to the
ambiguous parts of the CS8900 technical spec.
