I think this may be a question for address@hidden
I have the same problem, but usually just read/skim and delete
what I don't want.

You could try pine or elm. I've never used them so can't recommend one.
I myself am happy with mail/Mail/mailx.
As for vi getting munged, I had the same problem when I used TERM=ansi.
When I switched to TERM=vt100 or vt220 it worked fine. (I not only had trouble
with vi, but lynx also didn't work with ansi term. Don't know why.)
