You need to be applauded for this. It establishes a very nice precedent.

Maybe it's the same thing, but I rather see it as the "development code"
has been promoted to "pre-release" status.

Not much point in updating that file since the worthwhile changes
have been made. I would, however, prefer that "CHANGES.configure" be
completely integrated into "CHANGES.new", if it isn't already, and
the integration of the two become "CHANGES2-8".
My breakout of ac-0.97 still has "README.configure" and "README.win-386",
both of which serve little purpose.
I think the short blurb at the top of "README" should be replaced at the
time lynx2-8 comes into existence.
The development team and members of the lynx-dev community have done
a tremendously fine job. Let's exercise the heck out of it so that
lynx2-8 is bug-free! (Nothing wrong with a little idealism.)
