For ftp also consider lftp
(ftp://ftp.yars.free.net:/pub/software/unix/net/ftp/client/). It's the
pitbull of ftp clients, it's GPL'd, it's actively maintained, has its
mailing list, etc..

For dial-up connections that tend to go down unpredictably lftp is a
godsend.
