On some systems, I've experienced this misbehavior for a reason
as trivial as an adverse setting of the environment variables
LINES and COLUMNS.  Experiment.

He hints at an area for possible improvement.  Perhaps the
commented-out settings should have a prefix distinct from
the expository text for clarity.  Maybe "#(disabled)" or
"#==>".  OTOH, perhaps there shouldn't be the temptation
to enable everything with a single sed command.  :-)
