Lynx.pot was generated by running:
xgettext -f /j/files.t  -F -j -p po -d lynx

where files.t contains the hopefully complete list of modules containing
any gettext calls. The list is appended below. I've sent lynx.pot to
the Free Translation Project and am waiting for their comments on the
contents and procedures (see http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/).
I have used emacs with `po-mode.el' to edit some of the sample po
files. You can use any method you like, but in order to have a wider
distribution of your translations, I'd like to use the FT Project rules,
which include sending hard copy releases to the GNU project.

The gmo file is the machine specific language object.  The po makefile.in
generates code intended for gcc, which I had to use under Digital UNIX
to build that directory.  Michael T. Smith <address@hidden> told
me this about Solaris:

I'm still learning how to set this all up. I had picked a few languages
somewhat randomly at first. Only "fr" has a good sample translation file
currently. "de", "it", "pt", and "sp" have rough translations for the
"lynx -v" message and "it" has a few lines I hand-edited.
