Yow!  I take it this means you're running on a Sparc named "vax".

I get very similar:

    address@hidden uname -spnrm
    SunOS applsrv1 5.6 sun4u sparc
    address@hidden make
    testfile
    make: execvp: testfile: Permission denied
    make: *** [default] Error 127
    address@hidden

when the program exists but is marked nonexecutable:

    :r ! ls -l bin/*/testfile
    -rw-r--r--   1 pg       scm            0 Dec 31 17:27 
bin/sun4os5.bin/testfile
