lynx-dev Configuring lynx 2.8.2dev.20 on Digtal UNIX

Hi,

I fail to make ./configure --with-zlib work on my Digital UNIX
4.0D machine. I have zlib 1.1.3 properly (I guess) installed
in /usr/local/lib/libz.a The output from ar -w /usr/local/lib/libz.a
shows e.g.

gzopen                  [gzio.o]

Still, configure gives the following output and stops:

checking for gzopen in -lz... no
checking for -lz in /usr/local/lib... no
checking for -lz in /usr/local/lib/z... no
checking for -lz in /usr/lib... no
checking for -lz in /usr/lib/z... no
configure: error: Cannot link z library

I tried with
./configure --with-zlib
and even with
./configure --with-zlib=/usr/local/lib/libz.a

but to no avail. What is wrong?
