perhaps it does leak (I didn't really check that aspect), but it did force
the HTLine's that were being corrupted to be malloc'd rather than assigned
from the pool.  That let me run valgrind and see the bug.

it's fairly close - I'm only looking at some problems with specific
platforms, and intend just working on those.
