Actually, I find the inter-dependency with "libiconv" to make sense.
(Seems as though Bruno is the de-facto developer for both these days.)

Can't imagine why you'd "feel obliged to fix" anything related to the
gettext _package_.  Other than libintl's gettext(), it has nothing directly
to do with Lynx.  Maintenance of .po files and creation and installation
of the binary .mo files is NOT intended [by the gettext developers] to be
done by individual users.  That is the job of system-wide installers and
packagers.
