I got failures when trying to bootstrap:

bootstrap: getting translations into po/.reference for m4...

rsync: change_dir "/latest/m4" (in tp) failed: No such file or directory (2)

since m4-1.4 has no translation files, and the translation project
dropped the stale .po files for the unreleased 1.9 development branch.

Paul, I now noticed that the use of .po files was intentional (you
pushed commit 610290de adding gettext translation of author names back
in July 2020, but without emailing m4-patches at the time). How do you
get around the bootstrap failure?

I don't get a failure now, I expect because you turned off po updates.

I don't recall trying to bootstrap from scratch when I installed that patch, so I imagine that it worked because a previous bootstrap worked.

I guess what I need to do is release m4 1.4.18b to get a tarball with
the .pot file, send that to the translation project, then wait a week
before actually releasing 1.4.19 to see if I can pick up any .po files.

Sounds good.
